While cleaning out his late grandmother’s attic in Michigan, 43-year-old Dennis Wallace came across something unexpected. Tucked inside a sealed cereal box from 1972 was a rare Lincoln penny—now worth $90,000. What started as a routine cleanup quickly turned into the discovery of a lifetime.
A Surprising Coin Find in a Cereal Box
Inside the old box, Wallace found a small plastic sleeve labeled “Special U.S. Mint Edition.” Inside was a 1972 Doubled Die Obverse (DDO) penny—a rare coin known for its printing mistake. The doubling effect, especially noticeable on the date and the word “LIBERTY,” makes it highly valuable. Only a limited number of these coins were released, and even fewer have survived in good condition.

Wallace had the coin checked by experts at the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). It received an impressive MS66 Red grade, meaning it’s in nearly perfect condition with bright coloring. Coin expert Barry Thompson said, “It’s not just a rare coin—it’s part of American history.” The coin is expected to sell for between $80,000 and $95,000 at auction.

The 1972 DDO penny is one of the most famous error coins ever made. Unlike today’s mint mistakes, this one was released to the public. Its rarity, clear doubling, and near-perfect condition make it highly desirable among collectors. Even more special is the way it was found—safe and untouched in a cereal box for over 50 years.
